The dig team for 2013 is now set. Eleven students and adult volunteers will accompany Dr. Schuler for the 2013 season. Work will be done first in the beta Complex and then on the east side of the House of Tyche. Watch this site for daily updates starting 30 June.
With the growth of sites like Facebook and Flickr, students have less need for a blog on which to post their reflections on the dig for family and friends. Therefore, this site will be used for updates from the field and the Virtual Dig will become an archive by 1 June 2013. We will also be giving up the URL virtualdig.org. The archive will reside at https://northeastinsulaeproject.org/virtualdig.
Monday 1 April 2013 is the registration deadline 2013 team members. Sign up soon, using the online form at the Dig Registration link. Remember to send in your flight details, as soon as you book your ticket. Join us this summer!
I am traveling this week to Chicago to present a paper at the annual meeting of the American Schools of Oriental Research. I will be talking about the bone-carved Maenad and the Tyche fresco, arguing that their persistence into the Byzantine period and discovery in a home converted to an urban monastery is characteristic of early Byzantine Christianity in the east.
