Farewell to Anna and Alex
After completing two weeks of work, Anna and Alex now leave us to take up their new positions as Directors of Christian Education in the Lutheran Church. Alex will serve in Wisconsin and Anna in Michigan. We will miss their energy and joy of discovery. Wish we could save some shards for them to wash 😉
John recovers an intact unguentarium
While working near the north door, John pulled out a fully intact unguentarium, a small ceramic bottle that likely held olive oil or some other liquid or powder. After so many shards, a complete piece is exciting.
For more, consult, “The Chronology and Function of Ceramic Unguentaria” by Virginia R. Anderson-Stojanović in the American Journal of Archaeology Vol. 91, No. 1 (Jan., 1987), pp. 105-122.
Gina reveals the floor
After two weeks of hard work digging through more than a meter and a half of destruction fill, the team began to reveal the floor in DQ41, DP41, and DP40. In places the plaster and mud surface has survived. Where Gina is working, the plaster is gone; but the flat stones forming a base for the floor are clearly visible here in front of the southerly shelf.
