Day 17 of the 2016 Season
We almost completed work on the southwestern section of the north building.
We almost completed work on the southwestern section of the north building.
Concordia student Ben Meyer made the small find of the season at the Northeast Insula Project of the Hippos Excavations. He recovered a fully intact storage jar with a white finish. Its contents will be analyzed for hints as to what was stored in the jar. More details to follow.
Ben did the complete excavation of the jar, carefully removing surrounding soil until he could roll the jar free. Cradling it in his arms, Ben exclaimed, “It’s like giving birth.”
The final week of the excavation is upon us … and it is also the final season for the Concordia Team. After fifteen years, we are leaving the field and beginning the work of producing a final report.
Over the next couple of days, I plan some summative comments. But none of the last fifteen years would be possible without the many students and volunteers who have joined us here at Sussita National Park. So I begin with final week with a sincere word of thanks to all of you.
I am listing you all here . . . you have been wonderful . . . I offer my thanks and pray that the blessing of the One who walked these shores so long ago might remain with you always.
These are the teams representing 280 trips to the dig:

We have a corner! After several days of digging, Arny, Glenn and Emily revealed the northwest corner of the North Building.
We now now that the building is 8.94 m from exterior corner to exterior corner. The wall is solidly built and may have functioned as an exterior wall for part of the compound, especially and the mountain dropped off to the north.
Our model for the day shows the wall in its larger context.
We continue to clean up the garden area and as a result have a better perspective on the water fixture in the balk.
